Food handlers are required to obtain certification. In Utah, there are two levels of certification, the food protection manager certification and the food handlers certification. Every employee who comes into contact with food must be trained as a food handler, while establishments need to have one full time food manager. Training for food handlers is valid for three years. The objectives of the training program in Utah is to educate the food handlers, which provides more qualified employees, thereby reducing the risk of foodborne illness caused by improper food preparation and handling techniques.
The benefits to completing training include being able to become a food service manager, or the person in charge of the food service in a given establishment. Many employers will require this training prior to advancement. Certifications are good for three years, at which point the training must be taken again to receive a new card.
