About This License
Refrigeration Contractor (C-40) license covers assemble and install devices, machinery, and units, including temperature insulation units, ducts, blowers, registers, humidity, and thermostatic controls for the control of air temperature below 50 degrees Fahrenheit in refrigerators, refrigerated rooms, and insulated refrigerated spaces and to construct walk-in refrigerator boxes.
Requirements to Obtaining Your License
- Pre-approval is required.
- 4 years of experience in the past 10 years.
- Workers compensation insurance is required.
- Surety bond for at least $5,000 depending on your individual circumstances.
- Liability insurance for comprehensive personal injury ($100k per person; $300k per occurrence) and property damage ($50k per occurrence).
- The Hawaii Contractor’s Business and Law Exam is also required to be passed.
Applying For Your License
Obtain an Application from the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
Exam Details
- Closed Book.
- 80 questions and 3 hour time limit.
- 75% is required to pass the exam.
- Topics on the exam include Refrigeration, Commercial Refrigeration, Controls, Sizing and Estimating, Test and Inspection, Walk-In Box Construction, Ventilation, and Troubleshooting.
- The testing company is Prometric.
