Tennessee Contractors can apply for a Limited Residential License with the BC-A/r classification by completing a ‘Limited Residential Contractor’ course offered by a state community college.  This online course is offered through Southwest Tennessee Community College (SWTCC), with the Certificate of Completion being issued by SWTCC upon course completion.

The highlighting guides and quizzes are designed to familiarize students with testing materials. We do not provide students with exact test questions, as the state does not release this information.

Course Overview

Tennessee Contractors can apply for a Limited License with the BC-A/r classification, this classification restricts residential contractors to building in the amount of $125,000 or less. In lieu of the exams they may attend a course at, or offered in partnership with, a state community college. This course covers a variety of topics essential to beginning your career as a licensed contractor. With 365 days of access to the course upon purchase, you will be able to move through the course at your own pace while our system tracks your progress.

Once completed you can then follow Tennessee’s Licensing Steps listed below, to obtain your Limited Residential License (BC-A/r).

  1. Obtain your Certificate for a Limited Residential Contractor course from a Tennessee Community College
  2. Have a Financial Statement Prepared by a licensed independent accounting firm
  3. Prepare any necessary Letters of Reference and Proof of Insurance
  4. File and obtain any necessary documentation for your business with Tennessee’s Secretary of State’s office
  5. Complete your Tennessee Contractor’s License Application and submit it to the Board for Licensing Contractors with the $250 licensing fee
