The state of Michigan issues Electrical Licenses or Registrations to residents in most communities in the state of Michigan. Our online Exam Prep program is designed to prepare test takers for state level Electrical Journeyman, Master and Contractor licensing exams by taking students through the recommended references utilized during the exam with highlighting guides and quizzes.

The highlighting guides and quizzes are designed to familiarize students with testing materials used during the open book exam. We do not provide students with exact test questions, as the state does not release this information.

Course Overview

Michigan Electrical (Master/Journeyman/Contractor) Examination Materials are as listed below:

(Other editions of the NEC may be used during the examination, but the items on the exam are currently based on the 2017 edition.)

Licensing Information

The state of Michigan issues Electrical Licenses or Registrations to residents in most communities in the state of Michigan. However, if you reside in the City of Detroit where electrical licenses or registrations are issued locally, you should contact the City to verify your examination information. For State issued Electrical Licenses pre-approval from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs is required before taking any examinations. The State of Michigan’s Electrical License Requirements can be found listed below:

  • Journeyman Electrical License:
    • Must be at least 20 years of age.
    • Have not less than 8,000 hours of practical experience obtained over a period of not less than 4 years related to electrical construction or maintenance of buildings or electrical wiring or equipment under the direct supervision of a licensed person. (Maximum credit of 2,000 hours per year.)
    • Credit may be provided for graduation from or attendance at a recognized training or educational program.
    • Must take and pass the examination.
  • Master Electrical License:
    • Must be at least 22 years of age.
    • Has held an electrical journeyman’s license for not less than 2 years.
    • Have not less than 12,000 hours of experience obtained over a period of not less than 6 years related to electrical construction, the maintenance of buildings, or electrical wiring or equipment under the supervision of a master electrician.
    • Must take and pass the examination.
  • Contractor Electrical License:
    • Holds a master electrician’s license or has not less than 1 master electrician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. The master electrician shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations of electrical wiring and equipment.
    • Out-of-state corporations will not qualify for a contractor’s license unless they employ a master electrician residing in the state of Michigan.
    • Must take and pass the examination.
