Requirements To Obtain a Texas Plumbing License (Master, Journeyman)

You must be a citizen or national of the United States or an alien or non-immigrant eligible for licensure by the State of Texas.

For Masters you are currently licensed as:a Journeyman Plumber in Texas or another state and have held your license for at least four years

  • A Journeyman Plumber in Texas or another state,
  • Have held your license for at least one year
  • Have successfully completed a training program approved by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship
  • A Master Plumber in another state and previously held a Journeyman Plumber License for at least four years
  • A Master Plumber in another state, holding a Journeyman Plumber License for at least one year, and has successfully completed a training program approved by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
  • You have obtained your fingerprints for review and approval.

For Journeyman:

  • You are currently registered as a Plumbers Apprentice or currently licensed as a Tradesman Plumber-Limited in Texas or currently licensed as Journeyman Plumber or Master Plumber in another state
  • You have at least 8,000 hours of experience working in the plumbing trade
  • You have completed a 48-hour training course* approved by the TSBPE or you are enrolled and in or have completed a training program approved by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship
  • Your fingerprints have been reviewed and approved by the TSBPE.

*If you hold a Journeyman or Master Plumber License issued to you by another state, you do not have to complete the 48-hour training program.

The length of the Texas plumber exam depends on the type of license being sought: 

  • Tradesman Plumber License: The written exam is 120 minutes long and has 85 questions, while the practical exam takes 240 minutes to complete and has six questions.
  • Master Plumber License: The exam is a written exam only. Consisting of 308 questions and 360 minutes to complete the exam.
  • Journeyman Plumber License: The exam has 100 written questions; while the practical exam has six questions. 

To use your time efficiently in the exam, it is extremely helpful to prepare in-depth and have your book tabbed and highlighted prior to the exam. Highlighting, tabs and written notes in reference materials are permitted prior to arriving at the test site. However, during the exam you may not write in the reference materials.

Exam Overview

The applicant for a Master Plumber License (the “applicant”) will be tested on his or her knowledge and understanding of the proper installation of commercial and residential plumbing systems. The examination relates to work performed and decisions made on the job by a Master Plumber.
