Requirements To Obtain a Texas Residential Appliance Installer License
The Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR) has contracted with PSI Services LLC (PSI) to deliver its examinations. Upon TDLR approval of eligibility, you will receive an email confirmation with instructions for scheduling an appointment to take the examination. (If you have not provided an email address, you will receive a postcard via U.S. Mail with this information). You are allowed to test unlimited through your eligibility period.

The Texas Residential Appliance Installer Exam is an open book 240-minute exam that requires a 70% score to pass. To use your time efficiently in the exam, it is extremely helpful to prepare in-depth and have your book tabbed and highlighted prior to the exam. Highlighting, tabs and written notes in reference materials are permitted prior to arriving at the test site. However, during the exam you may not write in the reference materials.
Exam Overview
- Any soft-bound edition of the National Electrical Code® may be used for the examination. (Examination questions are based on the current TDLR-adopted bound edition). Loose-leaf, spiralbound, or ring-bound copies of the NEC book, will NOT be allowed in the examination room.
• Candidate’s NEC book may be highlighted, underlined, and/or contain notes prior to the examination session.
• NEC books may be tabbed with permanent index tabs manufactured and/or provided by the NEC book publisher.
