About This License

Heating and Air Conditioning (HAC)- Any individual or any regularly employed person for any partnership or corporation who for hire is engaged in the installation or service and repair of heating and air conditioning systems.

Refrigeration – Any and all legal entities engaged in the business of refrigeration contracting and servicing, installation, and repair.

Heating and Air Conditioning Systems or System – A heating and/or cooling apparatus consisting of an air heating and/or cooling fixture from pipes, plenums or blowers including any accessory and equipment installed in connection herewith; specifically excluding window units, automotive or farm implement type heating and/or air conditioning equipment.

Refrigeration – The use of mechanical or absorption equipment to control temperature, humidity, or both, in order to satisfy the intended use of a specific space, other than for human comfort.

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

  • Pre-approval from the Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors is required.
  • To be eligible for the exam, the applicant must have held an apprentice registration, issued by this Board, for two or more calendar years within the past 5 years; or has completed 3,000 hours of coursework or experience, as defined by the Board; or is a graduate of an approved heating, air conditioning, or refrigeration curriculum

The examination fee (paid directly to the board) is $150.00

Exam Details

  • The fee for the exam is $150 and is paid directly to the board.
  • The Alabama HVAC Contractor Exam has 80 questions and a time limit of 4 hours.
  • The Alabama Refrigeration Exam has 60 questions and a time limit of 3 hours.
  • A 70% is required to pass.
  • Topics on the exam for HVAC include: general knowledge, piping, systems and sizing, equipment, maintenance, and plan reading.
  • Topics on the exam for Refrigeration include: general knowledge, piping, systems and sizing, maintenance/troubleshooting, and plan reading.
  • The examinations are given by ProV Inc. at 1-866-720-7768.

Exam Review Education

We currently do not offer any training for this exam. Books can be purchased from our online bookstore.

Continuing Education

All certified contractors shall be required to acquire 4 credit hours of continuing education every year. We offer this online.

Reciprocity Agreement

This license has reciprocity with Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.
