About This License
- GENERAL COMMERCIAL CONTRACTOR (B-1)
Construction, alteration, and repair in connection with any structure built, being built, or to be built for the support, shelter, and enclosure of persons, animals, chattels, or movable property of any kind. This scope includes the supervision of all or any part of the above and includes the management, or direct or indirect supervision of any work performed.
This scope includes most of the L scopes except as they relate to electrical, plumbing, air conditioning systems, boilers, swimming pools, spas, and roofing (except shingles and shakes) which must be subcontracted to an appropriately licensed contractor. - GENERAL RESIDENTIAL CONTRACTOR (B)
Construction of all or any part of a residential structure or appurtenance, except for electrical, plumbing, air conditioning systems, boilers, swimming pools, spas, and roofing (except shingles and shakes) which must be subcontracted to an appropriately licensed contractor. Also included are the scopes of work in B-3 and most of the C scopes except as restricted above. - DUAL BUILDING CONTRACTOR (KB-1)
This classification allows the scope of work permitted by the B-1 General Commercial Contractor and the B- General Residential Contractor licenses.
Requirements to Obtaining Your License
- Four years of experience is required.
- Please note that the Arizona Statutes and Rules Exam is also required to be passed to obtain your contractor’s license.
- Workers compensation insurance is required if you employ at least 1 person.
- If you are doing residential work, you must participate in the Recovery Fund or post a consumer protection bond in the amount of $200,000.
Must carry a Bond (Commercial)
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is less than $150,000 your current bond will need to be $2,500
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is $150,000 or more but less than $500,000 your bond as of July 1st 2014 will be $7,000
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is $500,000 or more but less than $1,000,000 your bond as of July 1st 2014 will be $17,500
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is $1,000,000 or more but less than $5,000,000 your bond as of July 1st 2014 will be $25,000
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is $5,000,000 or more but less than $1,000,000 your bond as of July 1st 2014 will be $37,500
Must carry a Bond (Residential)
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is less than $100,000 your bond as of July 1st 2014 will be $4,250
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is $100,000 or more but less than $375,000 your bond as of July 1st 2014 will be $4,250
- If your Estimated Annual Volume (Per License Category) is $375,000 or more your bond as of July 1st 2014 will be $25,000
Applying For Your License
To apply, contact the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at 1-602-542-1525. Licenses are good for 2 years. Licenses are generally granted within 40-60 days.
- Commercial Contractor application fee is $890
- Residential Contractor application fee is $445
- Dual License Contractor application fee is $1,105

Exam Details
- The fee for the exam is $66 when taking 1 portion or $116 when taking 2 portions (business management and the trade).
- The exam has 100 questions and a time limit of 4 hours.
- A 70% is required to pass.
- Topics on the exam include sitework, concrete and concrete reinforcement; masonry; carpentry; metal framing; roofing; thermal and moisture protection; doors and windows finishes; plan reading and estimating equipment and tools, general building code.

Exam Review Education
