About This License

A Journeyman Natural Gas Fitter is a person who possesses the necessary qualifications and knowledge to install, alter and/or repair natural gas systems; is licensed as such by the board; is supervised by a master gas fitter; and is in the employ of an employing entity.

A Master Natural Gas Fitter is a person who possesses the necessary qualifications and knowledge to plan and lay out natural gas systems, supervises gas fitters in the installation, alteration, and/or repair of natural gas systems and is licensed as such by the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana.

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.

Journeyman

  • To qualify for examination, you must be registered as an apprentice through the State Plumbing Board and must have performed manual labor of gas fitting in a two (2) year training period under the direct on-the-job supervision of a licensed gas fitter OR hold a current plumbing license. If you are applying through an apprenticeship program you will only need to complete the first page and have the second page notarized. (You will not complete the vouchers) If you are applying with a current plumbing license you will need to complete both pages and have the application notarized.

Master

  • To qualify for examination, you must hold a current Natural Gas Fitter License (journeyman) and submit an application OR hold a current Licensing Board for Contractors Mechanical Work (statewide) license OR hold a current license issued by the Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board certifying or registering he/she as a professional engineer. Both Mechanical Work and Engineer license holders must produce a copy of a current license when applying.
