About This License
A licensed plumber in Michigan can perform all aspects of plumbing, utility connections, irrigation systems, as well as gas piping to water heaters, laundry equipment, kitchen equipment, gas grills, and swimming pool heaters.
Requirements to Obtaining Your License
Master Plumber License
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Two years experience as a journey plumber.
- Must pay the examination fee and pass the examination.
- Must pay the license fee.
Journey Plumber License
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Has not less than 3 years experience as an apprentice in the practical installation of plumbing under the supervision of a licensed authorized master plumber. (Up to one year of credit may be provided for graduation from a recognized trade school.)
- Must pay the examination fee and pass the examination.
- Must pay the license fee.

Exam Details
- 50 questions given in 2 hours (Contractor)
- 100 questions given in 2.5 hours (Master)
- 150 2.5 hours (Journeyman)
- The examination fee is $50.00.
- Covers oral, written, and practical tests and will cover the theory and practice of plumbing and knowledge of the state plumbing code, rules, and regulations.
