About This License

D-3 Contractor

The holder of this license may perform the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance or alteration of all refrigeration systems included in food storage, air conditioning, or special process systems. The requirements to qualify for this license examination shall be two (2) years as a properly licensed journeyperson or equivalent experience and training.

D-4 Journeyperson

The holder of this license may perform the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance or alteration of all refrigeration systems included in food storage, air conditioning, or special process systems, and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work. The requirements to qualify for this license examination shall be the completion of a registered apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and training.

Exam Details

  • Topics include Refrigeration and Refrigerants, Components, Controls, Valves and Wiring, Piping and Tubing, Tests, Inspection and Maintenance, and Safety.

  • $65 for 1 portion or $130 for both the trade and the business and law

D-3 Contractor Exam

  • 50 questions
  • 2 hours
  • 70% required to pass

D-4 Journeyperson Exam

  • 40 questions
  • 1.5 hours
  • 70% required to pass
