Individuals who wish to become a general contractor in the state of New Jersey must register with the Division of Consumer Affairs and obtain a license from the Department of Banking & Insurance if financing is involved. This registration process is necessary for any contractor involved in the construction, improvement or alteration of new or existing structures. New home construction and home repair work are regulated by the state through registration. Electrical and plumbing work requires licensing at the state level.
