About This License

contractors license covers the operation, installation, maintenance, repair, fabrication, alteration or extension of refrigeration systems; including electrical components, piping, refrigerants, and refrigeration components.

journeyman license covers the operation, installation, maintenance, repair, fabrication, alteration or extension of refrigeration systems; including electrical components, piping, refrigerants, and refrigeration components while employed by a Refrigeration Contractor.

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

Journeyman License Requirements

  • Applicants for a journeyman license must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and have either Four (4) years of verifiable experience in the mechanical trade in the category for which he is applying OR Have an associate degree or Vo Tech diploma from a school, approved by the Committee, which exhibits knowledge of the trade in the category of license applied for and two (2) years of verifiable experience in the mechanical trade.
  • Each active electrical contractor must furnish a $5,000 surety bond.
  • Workers compensation and $50,000 liability insurance are also required.
  • To become a licensed contractor, the business and law exam must also be passed.

Contractor License Requirements

  • Applicants for a contractor license must meet the same requirements as a journeyman with an additional one (1) year of experience in the mechanical trade.

Applying For Your License

  • An application for licensure can be obtained from the State of Oklahoma Construction Industries Board by calling 405-271-5217.
  • The application and licensing fee is $75.

Exam Details

Journeyman Exam

  • To take the exam, you must be pre-approved by the state.
  • The exam has 60 questions and a time limit of 150 minutes.
  • A score of 70% is needed to pass.
  • Topics on the exam include Electrical Knowledge and Controls, Refrigerants, Piping, Refrigeration Equipment and Components , Refrigeration Systems Operations, and Safety.

Contractor Exam

  • To take the exam, you must be pre-approved by the state.
  • The exam has 80 questions and a time limit of 2 hours.
  • A score of 70% is needed to pass.
