About This License

Residential: The holder of an electrical administrator license in the residential wiring category may supervise all work defined in (b) of this section, in accordance with AS 08.40.195, on a residential dwelling unit not exceeding three stories in height and no larger than a four-plex except three phase services and wiring. (b) Residential wiring is limited to the residential occupancies described in (a) of this section, and includes (1) inside wiring work as defined in 12 AAC 32.165(b); (2) inside communications work as defined in 12 AAC 32.195(b); and (3) control and control wiring work as defined in 12 AAC 32.275(b).

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

  • Licensees must possess a valid state of Alaska business license which is issued separately for $50 per year
  • An applicant for an electrical administrator license in the residential wiring category shall furnish proof satisfactory to the department that the applicant has practical experience as a journeyman residential wireman for at least two of the four years immediately preceding the date of application.

New applications, $300 ($50 – nonrefundable application fee, $250 license fee). For changes, see fee schedule. Check or money order should be made payable to the State of Alaska.

Exam Details

  • 75 questions and a time limit of 180 minutes
  • A score of 70% is needed to pass.
  • Exam fee is $150
  • Topics include: general electric knowledge, grounding and bonding, services/feeders/branch circuits, raceways and enclosures, conductors and cables, equipment and general use, special occupancies, special equipment, Alaska Statutes and Regulations, safety
  • The exam is given by PSI – 800-733-9267.
