Developed through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) consensus process, the UPC incorporates input from a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring balanced and widely supported standards.

Designated as an American National Standard, the UPC is recognized and adopted by various jurisdictions across the United States, including major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Portland.

The 2015 UPC introduced several significant updates to enhance safety, efficiency, and adaptability:

• Fixture Standards: Updated product standards for plumbing fixtures such as lavatories, showers, bathtubs, whirlpool bathtubs, bidets, urinals, drinking fountains, and sinks (Chapter 4)  
• Lead Content Provisions: Revised minimum acceptable lead content for pipes and fittings to reduce health risks (Chapter 6) 
• Fire Sprinkler Systems: New provisions for residential fire sprinkler systems to enhance fire safety (Chapter 6) 
• Hot Water Piping Insulation: Requirements for the insulation of hot water piping to improve energy efficiency (Chapter 6)  
• Medical Gas and Vacuum Systems: New requirements for medical gas and vacuum systems based on NFPA 99 standards to ensure safety in healthcare facilities 

Nonpotable Water Systems: Enhanced testing and inspection provisions for nonpotable alternate water source systems (Chapter 15) and rainwater catchment systems (Chapter 16) to promote water conservation and sustainability
