About the California Boiler, Hot-Water Heating, Steam Fitting License
A boiler, hot-water heating and steam fitting contractor installs, services and repairs power boiler installations, hot-water heating systems and steam fitting, including fire-tube and water-tube steel power boilers and hot-water heating low pressure boilers, steam fitting and piping, fittings, valves, gauges, pumps, radiators, convectors, fuel oil tanks, fuel oil lines, chimneys, flues, heat insulation and all other equipment, including solar heating equipment, associated with these systems.

The Boiler, Hot-Water Heating and Steam Fitting (C-4) Examination is divided into five major sections:
1. Planning and Estimating (15%)
• Plan boiler projects
• Estimate boiler projects
2. Boiler System Removal, Preparation, and Installation (29%)
• Remove old boiler systems
• Prepare job site for new boiler systems
• Install new boiler systems
• Test and complete boiler systems
3. Specialty Boiler Installation (17%)

This is a multiple-choice examination with four choices per question. Examination questions are written to provide only one BEST answer. Some questions require mathematical computation. A calculator will be provided. There is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure about a particular question, it is better to try to answer the question than to leave the question blank. Plenty of time is provided to answer all examination questions, so be sure to read each question and its four choices completely and carefully before selecting the BEST possible answer to the question.
The Boiler, Hot-Water Heating, and Steam Fitting Manual briefly covers the major topics of the State exam including Boilers, Piping Systems, Linear Expansion, Safety Valves, and Welding. The last section of the Boiler, Hot-Water Heating, and Steam Fitting Manual covers the Health and Safety Orders.
The Math Review Lecture covers the math formulas in the first part of the Boiler, Hot-Water Heating, and Steam Fitting manual. The Health and Safety Lecture covers the Health and Safety Orders at the end of the Boiler, Hot-Water Heating, and Steam Fitting manual.
Please be sure that you study all of the practice exams. It is important to read and understand each question, and read every word of the explanations. It is necessary to learn the principles behind the question because the State’s questions may be worded differently.
The C-4 Boiler, Hot-Water Heating, and Steam Fitting Contractor’s Computer-Assisted Practice Tests are supplied on a computer disk which will load a software program on the student’s computer. The program presents questions one at a time, automatically scores the exam, presents the student with a grade, and lists each question answered incorrectly along with the correct answer.
