Requirements To Obtain a Tennessee Residential/Small Contractor License
All contractors who remodel, repair, improve or construct a one, two, three, or four family unit residences that do not exceed three stories in height must be licensed in the state of Tennessee. Applicants must take and pass two exams, business and law and the trade and finally apply with necessary business information, workers compensation and proof of insurance to the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors by calling 1-800-544-7693.

An applicant applying for the B-2 Residential Remodeling license must have 4 years of journeyman level experience performing or directly supervising at least three (3) unrelated trades pertaining to remodeling. For example, experience with floor installation, painting, cabinet installation, tile, and more.
The B-2 manual includes:
• Chapters with summaries of trade information covered on the B-2 Trade Exam.
• Color Graphics, charts, and illustrations.
• Updated code sections.
• Math and Health & Safety sections.
The new B-2 practice tests feature:
• Five practice exams with 100 questions each covering math, general knowledge, plans, and quantity and cost
estimating.
• An update based on the latest feedback.
• Two Health and Safety practice exams to prepare students for new trade exams where 20% of the questions
cover Cal/OSHA regulations.
General Information
The B-2 classification is similar to the B classification in that a single contract must include three unrelated
building trades or crafts. However, B-2 contracts may not include structural changes to load-bearing portions
of structures or electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work behind a wall.
