NFPA 54: National Fuel Gas Code, 2021 Edition

NFPA 54: National Fuel Gas Code, 2021 Edition

Book Overview
In response to a devastating gas piping purging accident, NFPA 54 received an emergency Tentative Interim Amendment to the purging requirements in the 2009 edition. With minor editorial changes, the 2012 NFPA 54 presents new rules specifying the mandatory use of combustible gas indicators and detectors so employers can identify the presence of fuel gas. Significant changes improve safety and facilitate code application, such as a new bonding clamp location for corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) gas piping that clarifies bonding requirements added in the 2009 edition.
The code covers:
- Piping system design, materials, and components
- Pipe sizing and installing pipes underground, aboveground, and inside concealed spaces
- Piping inspection, testing, system leak check, and purging
- Requirements for process air and installation of appliances
- Minimum safe performance criteria, general requirements, and specifications for venting combustion products.
NFPA 54 applies to natural gas, manufactured gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LP-Gas), and gas-air mixtures. However, it does not cover systems operating at pressures over 125 psi for natural gas or 50 psi for propane. The latest edition, NFPA 54-2021, was approved by ANSI on November 1, 2021, and became available for purchase on January 26, 2021.
Key Features & Benefits
NFPA 54, also known as the National Fuel Gas Code, provides minimum safety requirements for the design and installation of fuel gas piping systems in homes and other buildings. It covers various aspects, including:
- Piping system design, materials, and components (Chapter 5)
- Piping sizing for applications (Chapter 6)
- Installation of pipes, outlets, and concealed spaces (Chapter 7)
- Requirements for process air, appliance installation, and safety shutoffs (Chapter 9)
Minimum safe performance and venting specifications (Chapter 12)
NFPA 54, also known as the National Fuel Gas Code, provides guidelines for the installation of fuel gas piping systems, equipment, and appliances. Its practical applications include:
- Ensuring Safety: It establishes standards to prevent gas leaks, fires, and explosions.
- Regulating Installations: Covers proper piping, venting, and appliance connections.
- Compliance for Professionals: Used by engineers, inspectors, and technicians to meet legal and industry standards.
- Training & Certification: Helps professionals gain expertise in fuel gas systems.
The NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code has training programs designed to help professionals understand and apply its requirements. The Instructor-Led Training covers topics like piping, venting, and appliance installation, and offers continuing education units (CEUs) upon completion. Additionally, there are exam preparation materials available that provide guidance on the latest safety standards, installation procedures, and regulatory updates.
The NFPA 54 Handbook provides a range of visual and organizational tools to help users understand and apply the National Fuel Gas Code effectively. Some key features include:
- Visual Learning Aids: Over 200+ images, including color photos, graphics, and charts, to illustrate complex concepts.
- Summary of Technical Changes: Highlights modifications from previous editions to help users stay updated.
- Code Change Indicators: Uses shading, bullet points, and “N” markers to indicate revisions, deletions, and new content.
- “At a Glance” Sections: Quick-reference guides to locate piping design and appliance content efficiently.
- Annex A Integration: Moves supplementary material into relevant sections to reduce page flipping.
