Servers in establishments that sell alcohol are required to obtain certification. In New York, there are different programs for servers on premises and off premises of the licensed establishment. The objectives of the Alcohol Training Awareness Program (ATAP) in New York are to improve public health and safety, establish a professional standard for hospitality services, improve business viability, and increase quality of life in the neighboring community.
