With our online courses, you can prepare for your Texas contractor’s license exams, get help with the application process, maintain your license with continuing education, and more.

You can select your course type using the filters below.

Texas contractor’s licenses are obtained through one of the state’s licensing authorities or a local licensing authority, depending on what type of license you are seeking. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) issues licenses to HVAC, electrical, and water well driller contractors. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) issues and regulates licenses for plumbing contractors in the state. Local licensing authorities sometimes require general contractors, builders, home improvement contractors, and others to get licensed prior to performing contracting work. These contractors do not need to get licensed on the state level.

Where Can I Find Exam Prep Books?

Construction industry books and tools are available in our bookstore. In addition to contractor license exam preparation books, reference materials like code books and business/law books, contractor industry-specific books are available for plumbing, electrical, HVAC-R, and more.

Does a handyman need a contractors license in Texas?

There are no handyman laws at a state level in Texas; instead, you will need to verify the contractor license requirements through your local jurisdiction. Many cities do have their own rules and laws regarding repairs and maintenance.

Austin
Depending on the type of work you plan on doing as a handyman in Austin, you may need a building permit or contractor’s license.

Dallas
For handymen in Dallas to begin working in the metropolitan area, they may need to register as contractors.

Houston
You don’t need to be licensed or registered to be a handyman in Houston. However, you may need building permits for certain types of projects.

San Antonio
It is necessary for most handymen in San Antonio to register as either home improvement contractors (for limited repairs) or residential building contractors (for more extensive construction).
