About the California Building Moving and Demolition License
A building moving/demolition contractor raises, lowers, cribs, underpins, demolishes and moves or removes structures, including their foundations. This classification does not include the alterations, additions, repairs or rehabilitation of the permanently retained portions of such structures.

This is a multiple-choice examination with four choices per question. Examination questions are written to provide only one BEST answer. Some questions require mathematical computation. A calculator will be provided. There is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure about a particular question, it is better to try to answer the question than to leave the question blank. Plenty of time is provided to answer all examination questions, so be sure to read each question and its four choices completely and carefully before selecting the BEST possible answer to the question.
The Building Moving and Demolition Examination is divided into five major sections:
1. Planning and Estimating (25%)
• Evaluating plans and specifications
• Evaluating hazardous materials surveys
• Evaluating job site readiness
• Determining job methods and equipment
• Estimating project costs
2. Project Preparation (20%)
• Permitting and notification
• Mobilizing labor, equipment, and materials
• Developing recycling plans
• Removing hazardous materials
3. Building Moving (13%)
• Moving preparation
• Determining weight and structural integrity
• Building raising and lowering
• Building support and transportation
4. Structure Demolition (21%)
• Pre-demolition site preparation
• Demolition of single- and multi-story structures
• Separating demolished materials
• Transporting materials and debris
• Cleaning and backfilling job sites
5. Safety (21%)
• Job site safety
• Personnel safety
• Implementing traffic controls
• Personal protective equipment (PPE)

The Building Moving and Demolition Manual briefly covers the major topics of the State exam including Concrete, House Moving, Case Studies in House Moving, Cranes and Derricks, and Demolition. The manual also contains summaries of the Uniform Building Code. The last section of the Building Moving and Demolition Manual covers the Health and Safety Orders.
The Math Review Lecture covers the math formulas in the first part of the Building Moving and Demolition manual. The Health and Safety Lecture covers the Health and Safety Orders at the end of the Building Moving and Demolition manual.
Please be sure that you study all of the practice exams. It is important to read and understand each question and read every word of the explanations. It is necessary to learn the principles behind the question because the State’s questions may be worded differently.
The C-21 Building Moving and Demolition Contractor’s Computer-Assisted Practice Tests are supplied on a computer disk which will load a software program on the student’s computer. The program presents questions one at a time, automatically scores the exam, presents the student with a grade, and lists each question answered incorrectly along with the correct answer.
