About the California Framing and Rough Carpentry License
A framing and rough carpentry contractor performs any form work, framing or rough carpentry necessary to construct framed structures; installs or repairs individual components of framing systems and performs any rough carpentry or associated work, including but not limited to the construction or installation of: sub-flooring, siding, exterior staircases and railings, overhead doors, roof decking, truss members, and sheathing.

The Framing and Rough Carpentry (C-5) Examination is divided into four major sections:
1. Planning and Estimating (20%)
• Project planning
• Blueprints, specifications, and shop/field drawings
• Estimating
• Calculations
2. Structural Framing (37%)
• Formwork
• Load and span
• Bracing
• Shear and diaphragm
• Structural hardware
• Wood and metal framing
3. General Framing (21%)
• Flashing and weatherproofing
• Siding, roofing, and flooring
• Doors, windows, and stairs
• Fences, decks, porches, and gazebos
• Squaring and leveling
• Access and ventilation
4. Safety (22%)
• Cal/OSHA requirements
• EPA and AQMD regulations
• Asbestos and environmental hazards
• Transportation and traffic control

Exam Overview
This is a multiple-choice examination with four choices per question. Examination questions are written to provide only one BEST answer. Some questions require mathematical computation. A calculator will be provided. There is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure about a particular question, it is better to try to answer the question than to leave the question blank. Plenty of time is provided to answer all examination questions, so be sure to read each question and its four choices completely and carefully before selecting the BEST possible answer to the question.
The Framing and Rough Carpentry Manual briefly covers the major topics of the State exam including Materials and Hardware, Accessibility, Wood and Metal Framing, Wood Shear Walls, Trusses, Roofing, Formwork. and Fences. The manual also includes brief summaries from the California Building Code. The Framing and Rough Carpentry Manual also includes the Health and Safety Orders and Framing and Rough Carpentry Review Questions.
The Math Review Lecture covers the math formulas in the first part of the Framing and Rough Carpentry manual. The Framing and Rough Carpentry General Knowledge lecture covers the topics addressed in the manual specific to the C-5 trade exam. The Health and Safety Lecture covers the Health and Safety Orders at the end of the Framing and Rough Carpentry manual. The Framing and Rough Carpentry Review Questions lecture covers the Framing and Rough Carpentry Review Questions in the back of the manual
Please be sure that you study all of the practice exams. It is important to read and understand each question, and read every word of the explanations. It is necessary to learn the principles behind the question because the State’s questions may be worded differently.
The C-5 Framing and Rough Carpentry Contractor’s Computer-Assisted Practice Tests are available online using an activation page with a unique code. The program presents questions one at a time, automatically scores the exam, presents the student with a grade, and lists each question answered incorrectly along with the correct answer.
