About the California Reinforcing Steel License
A reinforcing steel contractor fabricates, places and ties steel mesh or steel reinforcing bars (rods), of any profile, perimeter, or cross-section that are or may be used to reinforce concrete structures.

The Reinforcing Steel (C-50) Examination is divided into five major sections:
1. Planning and Estimating (29%)
• Plans and specifications
• Types and grades of reinforcing steel
• Determining quantities of materials
• Estimating costs
2. Fabrication (10%)
• Preparation
• Fabrication
3. Layout and Placement of Reinforcing Steel (18%)• Placing marks
• Setting templates
• Setting bar supports
• Placing and tying reinforcing steel
4. Post-Tensioned Cables and Specialty Projects (19%)
• Layout and placement of cables
• Stressing cables
• Placing reinforcing steel in special locations
5. Safety (24%)

Exam Overview
This is a multiple-choice examination with four choices per question. Examination questions are written to provide only one BEST answer. Some questions require mathematical computation. A calculator will be provided. There is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure about a particular question, it is better to try to answer the question than to leave the question blank. Plenty of time is provided to answer all examination questions, so be sure to read each question and its four choices completely and carefully before selecting the BEST possible answer to the question.
The Reinforcing Steel Manual briefly covers the major topics of the State exam including Bar Fabrication, Bar Identification, Welded Wire Fabric, Concrete Protection, Welding Reinforcing Steel, Welding Symbols, Pre-Stressing and Post-Tensioning, and Tying Bars. The manual also includes a Glossary. The last section of the Reinforcing Steel Manual covers the Health and Safety Orders.
The Math Review Lecture covers the math formulas in the first part of the Reinforcing Steel manual. The Health and Safety Lecture covers the Health and Safety Orders at the end of the Reinforcing Steel manual.
Please be sure that you study all of the practice exams. It is important to read and understand each question, and read every word of the explanations. It is necessary to learn the principles behind the question because the State’s questions may be worded differently.
The C-50 Reinforcing Steel Contractor’s Computer-Assisted Practice Tests are supplied on a computer disk which will load a software program on the student’s computer. The program presents questions one at a time, automatically scores the exam, presents the student with a grade, and lists each question answered incorrectly along with the correct answer.
