About the California Sanitation Systems License
A sanitation system contractor fabricates and installs cesspools, septic tanks, storm drains, and other sewage disposal and drain structures. This classification includes the laying of cast-iron, steel, concrete, vitreous and non vitreous pipe and any other hardware associated with these systems.

The Sanitation System (C-42) Examination is divided into five major sections:
1. Planning and Estimating (27%)
• Planning sanitation systems
• Estimating sanitation systems
2. New Septic System Installation (26%)
• Installing septic tanks
• Installing leachlines and seepage pits
• Testing and grading over septic systems
• Installing alternative treatment systems
• Specialty sanitation systems
3. Sewer Lateral Installation and Repair (10%)
• Installing sewer laterals
• Maintaining and repairing existing sewer systems
4. Septic System Maintenance and Repair (10%)
• Troubleshooting existing septic systems
• Removing or repairing existing septic systems
• Maintaining existing septic systems
5. Safety (27%)
• Employee training and safety
• Job site safety

This is a multiple-choice examination with four choices per question. Examination questions are written to provide only one BEST answer. Some questions require mathematical computation. A calculator will be provided. There is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure about a particular question, it is better to try to answer the question than to leave the question blank. Plenty of time is provided to answer all examination questions, so be sure to read each question and its four choices completely and carefully before selecting the BEST possible answer to the question.
Excavation & Grading Handbook, Revised, by Nicholas Capachi is an essential part of the Sanitation Systems course. The Handbook and the accompanying Excavation and Grading lecture contain vital information for passing the State exam.
The Sanitation Systems Manual briefly covers the major topics of the State exam including summaries of the Uniform Plumbing Code and Caltrans Standard Specifications. The last section of the Sanitation Systems Manual covers the Health and Safety Orders.
Please be sure that you study all of the practice exams. It is important to read and understand each question, and read every word of the explanations. It is necessary to learn the principles behind the question because the State’s questions may be worded differently.
The C-42 Sanitation Systems Contractor’s Computer-Assisted Practice Tests are supplied on a computer disk which will load a software program on the student’s computer. The program presents questions one at a time, automatically scores the exam, presents the student with a grade, and lists each question answered incorrectly along with the correct answer.
