About the California Sheet Metal License
A sheet metal contractor selects, cuts, shapes, fabricates and installs sheet metal such as cornices, flashings, gutters, leaders, pans, kitchen equipment, duct work (including insulation, patented chimneys, metal flues, metal roofing systems and any other installations requiring sheet metal).

The Sheet Metal (C-43) Examination is divided into four major sections:
1. Planning and Estimating (25%)
• Reviewing project plans
• Evaluating job sites
• Designing sheet metal projects
• Cost calculations
2. Fabrication (26%)
• Layout and pattern production
• Processing sheet metal
• Welding, soldering, and mechanical assembly
3. Installation (28%)
• Setting sheet metal components
• Gutters and downspouts
• Flashings
• Hoods and exhaust
• Metal roofs, siding, and paneling
• Specialty and miscellaneous items
4. Safety (21%)
• Personnel safety
• Shop and job site safety
• Hoisting and rigging operations

This is a multiple-choice examination with four choices per question. Examination questions are written to provide only one BEST answer. Some questions require mathematical computation. A calculator will be provided. There is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure about a particular question, it is better to try to answer the question than to leave the question blank. Plenty of time is provided to answer all examination questions, so be sure to read each question and its four choices completely and carefully before selecting the BEST possible answer to the question.
The Sheet Metal Manual briefly covers the major topics of the State exam including Materials, Drainage Systems, Flashing, Metal Roofing Methods, Symbols and Seams. The manual also includes summaries of the Uniform Mechanical Code. The last section of the Sheet Metal Manual covers the Health and Safety Orders.
The Math Review Lecture covers the math formulas in the first part of the Sheet Metal manual. The Health and Safety Lecture covers the Health and Safety Orders at the end of the Sheet Metal manual.
Please be sure that you study all of the practice exams. It is important to read and understand each question, and read every word of the explanations. It is necessary to learn the principles behind the question because the State’s questions may be worded differently.
The C-43 Sheet Metal Contractor’s Computer-Assisted Practice Tests are supplied on a computer disk which will load a software program on the student’s computer. The program presents questions one at a time, automatically scores the exam, presents the student with a grade, and lists each question answered incorrectly along with the correct answer.
