Requirements to Fulfill California Water Treatment Continuing Education (12 Hours)
The number of continuing education hours required to renew a California water operator certificate depends on the certificate grade and type:
- Treatment operators (T-type certificates)
- The number of hours required increases with the certificate number:
- T1: 12 hours, with a maximum of 3 hours for safety
- T2: 16 hours, with a maximum of 4 hours for safety
- T3: 24 hours, with a maximum of 6 hours for safety
- T4 and T5: 36 hours, with a maximum of 9 hours for safety
- Distribution operators (D-type certificates)
- The number of hours required increases with the certificate number:
- D1: 12 hours
- D2: 16 hours
- D3: 24 hours
- D4 and D5: 36 hours
Some things to keep in mind about continuing education for California water operators include:
- Courses must be completed within three years of the renewal form’s due date and cannot be used for a previous renewal.
- Contact hours can be used for both treatment and distribution renewals.
- Only subject matter related to drinking water treatment, distribution, or safety is acceptable.
