Who needs an Alabama Electrical Contractor License
All contractors: both electrical journeymen and electrician contractors who perform electrical work in Alabama, must hold an Alabama Electrical License by the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board.

Submit the signed and notarized application for approval to the site for the exam. According to the state, “Persons applying for a statewide electrical contractor examination must demonstrate a minimum of 8,000 hours’ experience that shows that you have designed, planned, laid-out and directly supervised electrical construction activities and the installing of electrical components.”
Applicants may substitute one year of education in electrical curriculum for one-half year electrical experience for a maximum of 2,000 hours of the required 8,000 hours of experience. The applicant must submit a copy of the diploma, certificate, or transcript.
Applicants must obtain a passing score on the Alabama Electrical Contractor Examination.
Those applying for a License in Alabama must also pass the Business and Law Exam
According to the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board, you do not need a general liability insurance to apply for your Alabama Electrical License. It is recommended to carry general liability and workers’ compensation insurance prior to doing electrical work.

- Complete the application and return it to the State. Include education and work records within the application during the application process.
- Receive an examination registration form and instructions for selecting an examination date.
