- Pass the exam.
- Submit your application, licensing fee and proof of insurance.
Requirements To Get A License
An applicant for a master license:
- Must have been licensed as a journeyman and regularly and principally employed to provide all areas of HVACR services for at least three years of active experience under the direction and control of a HVACR master;
- Worked a minimum of 1,875 hours in the year prior to applying for the master license;
- Passed the master examination with a score of 70%; and
- Currently hold a journeyman or higher level license.
Insurance requirement for master contractors who contract work
An applicant for a master restricted license:
- Must have been licensed as a journeyman and regularly and principally employed to provide HVACR services for at least three years of active experience under the direction and control of a HVACR master;
- Worked a minimum of 1,875 hours in the year prior to applying for a master restricted license;
- Passed the master restricted examination with a score of 70%; and
- Currently hold a journeyman or higher level license.
Insurance requirement for master restricted contractors who contract work
An applicant for a limited license:
- Must have been licensed as a journeyman and regularly and principally employed in providing HVACR services under the direction and control of licensed HVACR Master for at least two years;
- Worked a minimum of 1,000 hours in the year prior to application;
- Pass the limited contractor examination with a score of 70%; and
- Currently hold a journeyman or higher level license.
Insurance requirement for limited contractors who contract work
An applicant for a journeyman license:
- Must have been licensed as an apprentice for at least three years and during that period must have completed at least 1,875 hours of training in providing HVACR services under the direction and control of a licensed HVACR contractor;
- Pass the journeyman examination with a score of 70%; and
- Currently hold an apprentice license.

The application/license fees are as follows:
- Master: $75
- Master Restricted: $25 for each category, maximum $75*
- Limited: $75
- Inspector: $0
- Journeyman (including Journeyman Restricted): $20
Exam Details
- The Maryland HVACR Master and Journeyman Contractor exams have 100 questions and a time limit of 240 minutes.
- The Limited HVACR Contractor exam has 50 questions and a time limit of 120 minutes.
- All exams require a 70% to pass.
- Topics on the examinations include electrical knowledge, motors and controls; piping; refrigeration and air conditioning; heating systems; air distribution systems and safety.
- The fee for the exam is $150 and pre-approval is required.
- PSI Examination services provides examination services for the Board of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
