Master Gas Fitter
- Pass the Master Gas Fitting exam (pre-approval is required)
- 1 year of practical experience as a licensed VA Journeyman Gas Fitter OR
- 10 years’ experience in the trade

Journeyman Gas Fitter
- Pass the Journeyman Gas Fitting exam (pre-approval is required)
- Completion of a 2-year program from an approved trade school, technical school, or community college OR
- 240 hours of education/vocational training and 4 years’ verifiable experience in the trade OR
- 160 hours of education/vocational training and 5 years’ verifiable experience in the trade OR
- 80 hours of education/vocational training and 6 years’ verifiable experience in the trade OR
- Earned Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university and 1 year of verifiable experience in the trade OR
- 10 years’ verifiable experience in the trade

- Pass the Master Gas Fitting exam (pre-approval is required)
- Must also obtain a Contractor’s Class A, B, or C License

Applying for Licensure
Applications for licensure can be obtained from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation State Board for Contractors by calling 1-804-367-8511. You are required to submit your application to the Board prior to taking the examination. Exam Details
Journeyman/Master Gas Fitting
- The journeyman/master gas fitter exams have 50 questions and a time limit of 150 minutes.
- Master passing score is 74%. Journeyman passing score is 70%
- Topics on the examinations include natural and lp gas piping, pipe sizing, lp-gas tanks, gas piping controls, and testing; standards of practice; standards of conduct; renewal and reinstatement; definitions; qualification for licensure; and revocation of licensure.
- The fee for the journeyman portion is $100 while the master portion has a fee of $125.
