In the state of Maryland, general contractors may or may not need a state license, depending on the work done.
- New home construction does not require a state license, but does require registration with the Maryland Department of Labor, License and Regulation.
- Commercial contractors must register at the city/county level.
- Home improvement projects require a license issued by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. Additional requirements are proof of two years of work experience in home improvement or construction or related education, proof of financial solvency, proof of insurance and passing a business and law exam.
