North Carolina Contractor License Education, Exam Preparation, and Resources

Obtaining a general contractor’s license, whether it be for residential or building construction, is a mandatory requirement in the state of North Carolina (NC) for any projects that surpass the threshold of $30,000. Additionally, licenses are also essential for any electrical, plumbing, and HVAC projects undertaken within the state. To ensure compliance and legitimacy, interested parties must adhere to the following application procedures as per the respective boards governing each discipline.

For those seeking a General Contractor’s license, the initial step involves reaching out to the dedicated authorities. You can acquire the application form and necessary information by contacting the General Contractors board directly at the following number: 1-919-571-4183. Their team of knowledgeable professionals is well-equipped to assist you throughout the application process, providing guidance and clarifications as required.

For prospective Electricians, the licensure process requires you to get in touch with the Electricians board at 1-919-733-9042. They will furnish you with the essential application materials and guidance regarding the examination and evaluation criteria to ensure a smooth and successful licensing journey.

Similarly, for those aspiring to take on plumbing, HVAC, and fuel piping projects in North Carolina, it is imperative to secure the relevant license. To initiate the process, you can directly contact the Plumbing, HVAC, and Fuel Piping board at 1-919-875-3612. They will furnish you with all the necessary documentation and instructions to assist you in completing the application process accurately and efficiently.

It is crucial to note that all examinations, with the exception of Electrical, are administered through PSI (Professional Testing Services Inc.). To schedule these examinations, candidates must reach out to PSI at 1-800-733-9267. Their experienced staff will guide you through the examination scheduling process, providing you with suitable examination dates and locations to fit your convenience.

Contractor License FAQs

How Do I Get A Contractors License In North Carolina?

Per the process conducted through the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contactors, you must first send in your application. When you receive your eligibility letter, you must then pass your exams.

A general contractors license (residential or building construction) is required in North Carolina (NC) for projects that exceed $30,000.  Any electrical, plumbing, and HVAC projects will also require a license.

General contractor licenses issued by the NCLBGC have a classification and a limitation. The license classification is the specific type of work that can be performed with the license.

The limitation references the maximum dollar amount of the projects for which the license is valid.

Limitations are as follows:

Limited License: Valid for individual projects up to $500,000 each.

Intermediate License: Valid for individual projects up to $1,000,000 each.

Unlimited License: Valid for individual projects of any size.

Applications can be obtained from the following boards:

  • General Contractors by calling 1-919-571-4183
  • Electricians by calling 1-919-733-9042
  • Plumbing, HVAC, and fuel piping by calling 1-919-875-3612.

All examinations other than Electrical can be scheduled through PSI by calling 1-800-733-9267. For electrical examinations, contact Promissor at 1-800-204-6231.

How Much Does It Cost?

Limited: $75

Intermediate: $100

Unlimited: $125

License Requirements

The North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contactors requires applicants to:

  • be at least 18 years old,
  • possess good moral character, as determined by the Board
  • provide evidence of financial responsibility, as determined by the Board
  • submit the appropriate application fee
  • Pass a North Carolina Classification Exam(s)

Does A Handyman Need A License

According to North Carolina state law, a general handyman does not need a license to perform basic repair and maintenance tasks for homeowners. Licenses are only required if the projects being worked on are worth more than $30,000. Additionally, you will not need a license if you are a subcontractor working under the supervision of a general contractor.

Can I Get A Contractors License Without Experience?

Although experience is not a requirement of the NCLBGC application, you are expected to include experience on the application.
