The three classifications of an electrical contractors license are Limited, Intermediate, and Unlimited. An Electrical Contractor license is required in North Carolina to engage, offer to engage, in the business of electrical contracting within the state of North Carolina. Applicants must submit a completed application to get pre-approval from the State Licensing Board to take the exam. - Submit your application, licensing fee and proof of insurance.
Requirements To Get A License
To be considered for a qualifying examination administered by the Board, the applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years
as certified by date of birth shown on the application and must submit a completed application form, together with the
following required information:
▪ Statements from present and/or past employer(s) satisfactorily verifying that the applicant has acquired the minimum years of
experience for the examination classification desired (see Employer Statement Forms, in back of this bulletin).
▪ Statement from TWO (2) responsible persons attesting to applicant’s good character (see Character Statement Forms, in back of
this bulletin).
▪ UNLIMITED CLASSIFICATION ONLY: Statements from TWO (2) responsible persons attesting to applicant’s ability to satisfactorily
supervise and direct all electrical wiring or electrical installation work done by an electrical contracting business in the
UNLIMITED CLASSIFICATION (see Supervise and Direct Statement Forms, in back of this bulletin).
Books and References for the Exam
The examinations are OPEN BOOK. The references listed below are the ONLY references allowed in the examination center. References shall be softbound, spiral, or hardbound. Loose leaf references are not allowed. Candidates are responsible for bringing their own references to the examination center.

Applying for Licensure
After successfully passing a qualifying examination applicants for electrical contracting license in any of the license classifications MUST:
1. Submit a completed application for the license classification desired
2. Submit the appropriate annual license fee
3. Furnish the name, signature and social security number of at least one person to serve as the listed qualified individual for the applicant’s license.
