How Do I Get My License?

  1. Obtain Pre-Approval from the Board to sit for the Examination.
  2. Purchase the Exam Prep Course — and then study!
  3. Pass the exam.
  4. Submit your Licensing Application, licensing fee and proof of insurance.

Requirements To Get A License

To be considered for a qualifying examination administered by the Board, the applicant must be at least eighteen years old and must submit a completed application form with the following required information.

For Limited and Intermediate Applicants:

  • Statements from present and/or past employer(s) satisfactorily verifying that the applicant has acquired the minimum years of experience for the examination classification desired.
  • Statement from two responsible persons attesting to applicant’s good character.

For Unlimited Applicants: 

  • Statements from present and/or past employer(s) satisfactorily verifying that the applicant has acquired the minimum years of experience for the examination classification desired.
  • Statement from two responsible persons attesting to applicant’s good character.
  • Statements from two responsible persons attesting to applicant’s ability to satisfactorily supervise and direct all electrical wiring or electrical installation work done by an electrical contracting business in the Unlimited Classification.

Applying for Licensure

North Carolina has three classifications for electrical contractors. They are the Limited, Intermediate, and Unlimited Classification. An Electrical License is required in the state of North Carolina to engage or offer to engage, in the business of electrical contracting within the state. Applicants must submit a completed application to get pre-approval from the State Licensing Board to take the exam.

After successfully passing a qualifying examination, applicants for Electrical License’s in any of the license classifications MUST:

  1. Submit a completed application for the desired license classification.
  2. Submit the appropriate licensing fee.
  3. Furnish the name, signature and social security number of at least one person to serve as the listed qualified individual for the applicant’s license.

Exam Details

Exams are administered through PSI in partnership with The North Carolina Board of Electrical Contractors.

Limited, Intermediate and Unlimited Examination Details:

  • Examination Fee is $90.00 for ALL Classifications.
  • All Exams will have 100 Questions, with the number of questions per content area varying depending on Classification.
  • All applicants will have a maximum time of 6 Hours to complete the exam.
