The Tennessee Residential Contractor Exam Review is made up of a detailed presentation that takes you through information you will need to pass the exam on your first try.
A Tennessee contractorās license is required first prior to bidding, contracting or offering a price to perform work.Ā A contractorās license is required in Tennessee (TN) prior to bidding any project that exceeds $25,000. Subcontractors who perform work in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC projects exceeding $25,000 are also required to be licensed.
Per the process conducted through theĀ Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, the first step to get a contractors license is to pass two exams: a Business & Law exam and a trade exam (for various classifications). On the application, you must also specify the classification of license you are applying for.Ā Ā Here is a complete list of license classifications and exams needed.

- Submit your application, licensing fee and proof of insurance.
Requirements To Get A License
Tennessee Department of Commerce and InsuranceĀ requires applicants to:
- Pass the āBusiness and Lawā exam, plus any required trade exam
- Provide a financial statement
- Provide a Reference Letter and Insurance
- Verify Workersā Comp Insurance is Covered for Working in Tennessee
- Disclose your business structure ā Corporations, LLCs, and Limited/General Partnerships must register with theĀ Secretary of State.
Submit notarized applicationĀ plus $250 fee
*The Business and Law Exam must be passed to become a licensed contractor
