A Tennessee contractor’s license is required first prior to bidding, contracting or offering a price to perform work. A contractor’s license is required in Tennessee (TN) prior to bidding any project that exceeds $25,000. Subcontractors who perform work in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC projects exceeding $25,000 are also required to be licensed.
Per the process conducted through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, the first step to get a contractors license is to pass two exams: a Business & Law exam and a trade exam (for various classifications). On the application, you must also specify the classification of license you are applying for. Here is a complete list of license classifications and exams needed.

It costs $250 for a two-year contractors license in Tennessee and $200 for a renewal license.
Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance requires applicants to:

For performing repairs, improvements, or additions during residential and remodeling projects between $3,000 and $24,999 a Home Improvement license is required for the following counties:

Although experience for a specific length of time is not a requirement of the application, your application will be declined without verifiable experience.
