Licensed Contractor
According to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, anyone who wishes to bid and work on projects over $25,000 will need licensure prior to bidding or contracting for the work. Per the state, this includes any person(s) acting in the following role:- Prime (General) Contractor – Bidding or contracting directly with the “owner” of the project;
- Subcontractor – Contracting directly with any contractor (not to the owner) to perform projects when the total cost of that portion on the project is *$25,000 or more, for the following (includes all materials, equipment, and labor):
- Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, HVAC, and **Roofing; and Masonry when *$100,000 and up
- Construction Management – When the value of the total project is $25,000 or more.
Tennessee Contractor Licensing and Application Fees
Anyone seeking to become a contractor in Tennessee is required to sit for two exams, business and law and the trade. Once these have been passed successfully, candidates can continue with the application process. Payments are submitted with the application:- Non refundable $250 application fee
- $57 Business and Law exam fee
- $57 NASCLA exam fee
