Are you looking to obtain a Florida Contractor License or do you need to complete continuing education to renew your Florida Contractor’s license? At Home Prep can help. We’ve been a trusted provider for Florida Contractor License exam prep, continuing education courses, and application processing services for over 20 years.
Florida issue licenses in a variety of classifications, so you’re sure to find the right fit for your skills and expertise including the following:
General Contractor

Residential Contractor
Specialty Contractor
Just a heads up – if you’re planning on bidding for any work in Florida, you’re going to need a contractor’s license! There are no expectations even for projects under $1000. Florida is very strict and you could face hefty penalties and fines for unlicensed contracting. For more information about requirements, visit The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
Florida Contractor License Courses
Below is a complete list of our Florida Contractor license exam prep courses, packages, and continuing education courses. If you have questions, or can’t find the course you need, call us at 800-952-0910 or chat with us in the bottom right corner.
Florida Contractor License & Exam
Before you can actually take the Florida Contractor License exam, it’s crucial to be preapproved. Essentially, you’ll need to submit an application, which will be reviewed by a board every other month. To ensure that you’re fully prepared and avoid any last-minute surprises, it’s a great idea to get started on the process early. We recommend submitting your application for approval as soon as you begin studying for the exam. This is because the approval process can take up to two months to complete. Taking this proactive approach will help you avoid unnecessary delays and ensure a smooth experience.
It’s worth noting that according to Florida state guidelines, you’ll need to pass two exams – one focusing on business and finance, and the other on your specific trade. The good news is that both exams are open book, so you’ll have the resources you need to succeed!
On top of that, you’ll need to have at least four years of experience (or a combination of education and experience), show proof of financial stability, and have liability and worker’s compensation insurance. Once you’ve met all those requirements, you can register with the state and apply for a trade license at the local, city, or county level.
But don’t stress – we’re here to help! We offer online exam prep, books, and continuing education to assist you in obtaining and maintaining your Florida Contractors License. With a variety of license types to choose from, we even provide No-Pass No-Pay and pricing guarantees. Let’s work together to make your contracting dreams a reality!

Contractor License FAQs
In order to get your contractor license in Florida, you must first pass your exams and go through the process conducted through the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board, which operates under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). By allowing us to be the chosen provider for exam prep courses, continuing education credits and a variety of other courses, students can be assured they are receiving state and industry approved training.
We offer a wide range of exam prep books for the construction fields. Visit our bookstore to begin.
Licensing costs vary depending on the type of license you need. For example, some trades will cost more than others and some licenses, like the general contractors license, require additional certification. Those additional certifications add to the cost. If you have a specific question about the cost of study materials for your license, contact us. Our support team is here to help.
The Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board offers many different contractor license types. As different license types allow for varying work parameters, requirements and supporting documents may change slightly for your individual application process. However, the board will require most applicants to:
- Be 18 years of age.
- Show proof of financial solvency — Including submitting proof of a FICO credit score of a minimum of 660. You may purchase a surety bond if your credit score is lower.
- Scan and comply with an electronic fingerprint. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement offers a list of approved Livescan Device Vendors.
- Provide proof of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance.
- Pass a Florida State Construction Examination.
- Fill out your application.
- Pay all application and licensing fees.
- Several licenses, including the general contractor licenses below, will have additional requirements to be met.
According to Florida state law, a general handyman does not need a license to perform basic repair and maintenance tasks for homeowners. However, if an unlicensed handyman does work that falls into the scope of a licensed contractor, he or she is subject to fines and prosecution. It’s better to be safe than sorry if you’re considering handyman work, so check with your licensing department for specific rules.
According to the DBPR, applicants are required to have four years of experience or a combination of college and experience. Learn more at myfloridalicense.com.
Yes, it is possible to get a contractor’s license in Florida if you are a convicted felon. According to thelienzone.com, there are some limitations that apply so be sure to check with your specific licensing department for a final verdict on your ability to get the license.
