Apprenticeship & Experience

The good news is that there are fewer steps in Georgia for the path to becoming an electrician. It does require 5 years of experience working independently without direct supervision (approx 8,000 hours) plus 180 hours of classroom education for each year you are in training. You can either enroll full time in a technical school prior to seeking entry-level employment or become an apprentice, where you combine classroom experience with a full-time job supervised by an electrical contractor. Many will also choose to work as a journeyman once your technical training and apprenticeship has been completed. Though this phase is not part of the Georgia state licensing requirements, you can still earn the Journeyman Certificate according to national standards. This certificate is recognized in virtually every other state and may be very useful should you work in more than one jurisdiction or need to move.

License Types and Requirements

Like most states, Georgia requires electricians to be licensed with the Georgia Construction Industry Licensing Board for all electrical work. Registered Licenses Requirements

For either license:

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
A separate Georgia Business and Law exam is NOT required to be passed.
An applicant must be 21 years old and be able to document 4 years of experience.
Pass the proper exam with a score of 70%
If you should fail the exam twice, you must complete a state approved training course before testing again
Submit three references with at least one reference from a licensed electrical contractor
**For Class II you must also have worked with and installed systems of more than 200 amperes.
