    • There are three main types of Georgia Contractor Licenses, Residential Basic, Residential Light Commercial and General Contractor or NASCLA.
    • A license is required for any projects over $2500.
    • Both licenses require you to pass the Business and Law, and the Construction Exam
    • If your specialty is Conditioned Air, Electrical, or Plumbing, you’re only required to pass one combined business and law/trade exam (combined business and law/trade).
    • There are also experience requirements to obtain your Georgia Contractor’s License.
      • Residential Basics/Residential Light Commercial – Two years of construction experience
      • General Contractor – Four years of construction experience required

Contractor License FAQs

How Do I Get A Contractors License In Georgia?

Per Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors, general contractors are required to be licensed for work over $2,500. 

As of 11-1-2016, pre-approval from NASCLA is required to sit for the examination. This is done by submitting a completed application, then 2 exams must be passed: Business and Law, and the Construction Exam (Residential, Residential Light Commercial, General Contractor). 

For Conditioned Air, Electrical, and Plumbing, you will only be required to pass one exam (combined business and law/trade)

To schedule your exam, you must first obtain pre-approval from NASCLA. Then, contact PSI at 1-800-733-9267. @Home Prep’s training for Georgia exam prep courses, continuing education credits and other courses is approved at both state and industry level. Our online education is fully online, easy to take, and self-paced so that students can learn when it’s most convenient. 

Do I Need A License?

Per Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors, general contractors are required to be licensed for work over $2,500. 

Depending on the work you do and the amount of the contracts, you will need one of the following licenses:

  1. Residential-Basic Contractor – Performs work relative to detached one-family and two-family residences and one-family townhouses not over three stories in height.
  2. Residential-Light Commercial Contractor – Performs work that is the same as residential-basic plus such contractor work or activity related to multifamily and multi-use light commercial buildings and structures
  3. General Contractor – Performs contractor services unlimited as to type of work contracted for, undertaken to perform, bid or proposed upon for residential or commercial properties. 
  4. General Contractor Limited Tier – Performs same work as General Contractor but  limited to contract amounts of $500,000 or less.

*Certain specialty trades or work costing less than $2,500 does not require the services of a state licensed contractor.

How Much Does It Cost?

The Application fee is $200.

Reciprocal Agreements

This license has reciprocity with Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia. However, you must have held the same classification of license in these states for at least three years to qualify for reciprocity.

Does A Handyman Need A License?

Per Georgia state law, a general handyman does not need a license for work that under $2,500.

Can I Get A Contractors License Without Experience?

According to the Georgia State Licensing Board, all applicants must have both education and experience. The experience requirements can be met through a combination of formal education and practical experience or practical experience alone.

General Contractor and General Contractor Limited Tier applicants must have a four-year degree from an accredited university or college in architecture, engineering, building construction, or project management (or similar fields) AND 1 year work experience.

Residential Light Light Commercial Contractor applicants also must have a four-year degree from an accredited university or college in architecture, engineering, building construction, or project management (or similar fields) 1 year work experience; or 4 years active work experience in a construction industry related field with significant responsibility on at least two projects within the residential-light commercial category.

Residential Basic Contractor applicants must have at least two years of proven work experience working as or in the employment of a residential contractor.

License Requirements

The state of Georgia  requires applicants to:

  • Be 21+ years old
  • Possess good moral character, as proven with a criminal background check
  • Pass the required exams
  • Provide copies of insurance certificates
