Applying for Licensure
For information please contact the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation at 804-367-8511.
The Board for Contractors licenses businesses engaged in the construction, removal, repair, or improvement of facilities on property owned by others. Contractor licenses consist of two parts: the class of license (A, B, or C), which determines the monetary value of contracts/projects that may be performed, and the classification/specialty, which determines what type of work is allowed. The Board also licenses individuals and firms engaged in residential building energy analysis, which involves evaluation of energy consumption and recommendations to improve energy efficiency.
According to the Virginia DPOR, applications are processed on a first in – first out basis. The average processing time for most applications is approximately 30 days. This is just an average and it can be more or less depending on a number of factors.
The license will be issued at the initial review and will be mailed to you if your application is complete and you have met all of the eligibility requirements. If your application is incomplete, then a letter will be sent to you outlining what was missing and what is needed to finish the review and issue your license.
