Contractors in California are legally required to have a California contractor’s license before bidding on commercial, residential, and public works construction involving projects that exceed $500. The license is issued by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and is designed to ensure that contractors meet certain standards of experience, knowledge, and financial responsibility. To obtain a contractor’s license, an individual must meet certain eligibility requirements, demonstrate the required work experience, obtain a contractor’s license bond and liability insurance, and pass a two-part examination covering trade-specific knowledge and California’s construction laws and regulations.
The California contractor’s license is broken down into 44 different categories based on the type of construction work being performed, such as general engineering, general building, electrical, plumbing, and more. Once obtained, the license must be renewed every two years and requires ongoing education to stay up-to-date with changes in the industry.
